Saturday Morning Coffee with Juli

This weekend it was Juli’s turn to talk about her weekends with her ginger boy Tuukka in London.

So tell us about Tuukka, how did you two come to be together?

In June 2022 my 15-year-old tabby, Bizkit was sadly put to sleep due to renal failure. I was heartbroken and needed to have another cat as I missed the company I had with Bizkit. I then got introduced to a tiny ginger 6-week-old kitten who came to live with me three weeks later. He has kept me on my toes since. He’s now thirteen months old and what we call a pavement special – a beautiful ginger short hair.

He sounds like a beauty. Do you have any funny nicknames for him, his name is already pretty special.

Tuukka is known as GingerBeastie (Bizkit was known as FurBastard).

The cat nicknames never disappoint. So we know you live in London, but what do you do for work in the big city?

I work as a PA within the NHS and have done since 2001. Prior to that I actually worked in 5 different countries but ended up settling in the UK. And to be honest, having worked around the world, I’m really happy with where I am today and wouldn’t swap it.

Do you guys have a typical Saturday morning routine together?

Being woken up to Tuukka biting my feet to get my attention is the usual. He’s always desperate to be fed his Republic of Cats food. Then it’s usually coffee and lounging in bed for 1-2 hours playing with Tuukka. I’ll sometimes have a duvet day watching movies or ice hockey, or playing on the PlayStation. In winter I work as an ice marshall at outdoor ice rinks at weekends!

Oh wow, that must be exciting. What is it about weekends that you most look forward to?

Honestly just a late lie-in and to do as little as possible. Spending time with Tuukka and his entertaining antics is just the best.

So have you always loved cats and known you were a cat person? And if so, what’s the coolest cat person thing you own?

I’ve always had an affinity with cats, my children call me the “cat whisperer” so yes I’d say I’ve always known I was a true cat person. Oo where do I start?! I would have to say it’s either the cat tree or Tuukka’s window hammock. He is always lying in it and keeping watch over the neighbourhood. Oh and the CatCam to keep an eye on Tuukka! There is plenty of options.

Aw, he sounds like the best spoilt boy. Aside from his various snoozing spots, are there any sneaky snacks you probably shouldn’t feed your cat but you secretly do?

Biltong or Droewors – a South African delicacy of dried meat, he absolutely loves it and you certainly can’t hide it from him!
