Pet Database x Republic of Cats – Microchipping special

If you’re a cat owner in the UK, we’re almost certain you will have heard of microchipping. Microchipping your cat is really important, and a legal requirement for all cats over the age of 20 weeks. Get it done as soon as you can in order to keep your cat as safe as possible from the get-go.

So what exactly does microchipping entail, and why is it so essential for a responsible cat owner?

What is microchipping, and how does it work?

A microchip is a teeny tiny device that vets will implant under your cat’s skin – usually between the shoulder blades. This is often done on their first vet visit. If you’re not sure if your cat has one, prioritise a visit to your vet. Each chip carries a unique identification number that can be scanned and recognised by vets, shelters or anyone with a chip scanning device.

If a cat is lost, a simple scan for a microchip will reveal its unique ID and registered details, allowing the finder to contact the owners and return the cat safely to its home. It’s an essential piece of kit for any responsible cat owner.

Despite this, it’s important to remember that a chip doesn’t work like a tracker and can’t actively let you know where your cat is wandering (this is a common misconception)! Microchips are a genius tool, but they work even better when supported by accurate records and trusted databases.

Keeping your cat’s details up to date

Whilst a chip is the first step, keeping your cat’s microchip details up to date is essential. The microchip itself only stores a number. Your contact details, addresses and cat’s information are held securely on a pet database. If those details are out of date, even a correctly implanted and functioning microchip may not help your cat get home quickly.

If you’re planning a house move, changing your mobile number or even switching your email, be sure to put updating your cat’s chip details at the top of your checklist. It’s a small task that will only mean less stress in the long run if your cat does decide to take a little holiday or detour.

Now that we understand Microchips, let’s talk Smart Tags

Yes, that’s right… there are even more ways to keep your cat safe!

Microchips are so important when a cat is lost, but they do require a special scanner and usually a vet trip to locate their humans. This is where Smart Tags come in as the ultimate complementary accessory.

Pet Database Smart Tags use QR codes that can be scanned by anyone with a smartphone. A simple little tag is attached to your cat’s collar that anyone can scan if they suspect that your four-legged friend is a little far from home. No battery or charging is required, and with the correct info stored on your account, your cat can be back home snoozing in no time.

Pet Database, DEFRA compliance and The Republic

Not all databases are created equally. DEFRA-compliant databases meet the government requirements for data accuracy, accessibility and traceability. Big, important words when it comes to the safety of your best furry pal.

Pet Database is DEFRA-compliant and offers services that actively help prevent pets from going missing. They are the only UK microchip database with real, operational lost and found capability. When a pet is reported missing, the platform alerts local vets and pet wardens and runs targeted social campaigns using the pet’s photo. Over 600 rescues use and work with the platform for free, and more than 5,000 pets have been rehomed through it!

We’ve teamed up with them to ensure your cats can stay safe and supported by a database that’s doing things properly.

Microchipping, up-to-date records, visible Smart Tags AND a nutritious, tailored feeding plan? The cats really have got the cream with this collab.

Personalised nutrition for your feline friend, plus microchipping (alongside a Smart Tag) will give you the peace of mind that you’re doing everything you can to keep your beloved pet healthy and safe. Arrange a chat with your vet to book an appointment if you haven’t already.
